The distillation process seems to have been used even from very ancient times. ARISTOTLE (384–322 BC) mentioned that pure water is made by the evaporation of seawater. ~~~ This was soon after the time of ESTHER (circa 401 B.C.) and during the time of the EXILE of the ISRAELITES ~~~
Pliny the Elder (A.D. 23–79) writes of a primitive method of condensation in which the OIL acquired by heating rosin was collected on wool set in the upper part of a device called a still. ~~~ Pliny would have been a child during the ministry of JESUS, and the ministry of PAUL also took place during this time (through circa 67 AD) ~~~
Steam distillation (which is how we get ESSENTIAL OILS today) was reportedly only developed around the 9th century A.D.

Until very recently, it was believed that distillation was invented by the renowned Persian physician, Ibn Cina (known as Avicenna in Europe), who lived from 980 to 1037. ~~~ During this time, Hungary and Scandinavia converted to CHRISTIANITY, Viking raider LEIF ERIKSSON discovers North America (he called it Vinland), and the Old English epic BEOWULF was written (circa 1000 AD) ~~~
But in 1975, during a research expedition to Pakistan led by Dr. Paolo Rovesti, a terra-cotta distillation device dating from circa 3000 BC was discovered in the archaeological museum at Taxila. ~~~ If this dating is accurate, SETH, the third son of ADAM would have died a few years before this (circa 2912 BC) and NOAH was not even born yet! ~~~
This evidence seems to suggest that distillation is quite a bit more ancient than was previously supposed. But whatever its origin, and whoever first invented it, it spears that Avicenna was the first to apply the process of distillation to the preparation of Rose Water and other aqueous perfumes from flowers. This he did by blowing live steam into the distillation vessel filled with plants. Avicenna, then, would seem to be the innovator who first developed STEAM distillation.
